Quick answer: Here is how to fit a jerry can holder. First, pick a holder that suits your can. Then choose a flat, solid spot on your ute tray, trailer or canopy. Check the lid can open and the can lifts out. Bolt through the floor of the holder with large washers and locking nuts. A gas bottle holder goes on the same way. Just match it to your bottle size.
Loose cans and bottles tip, roll and go missing. A fixed holder stops that. This guide uses the real sizes from our range. See all our jerry can holders, or the full fuel, gas and tool holders range for gas bottle, oxy and acetylene holders.
Why use a holder?
- It keeps the can or bottle upright, so it is less likely to leak.
- It stops it rolling into other gear, or off the back.
- It keeps fuel and gas out of your toolbox and away from tools.
- A padlockable holder makes theft harder when you leave the vehicle.
Step 1: Measure your can or bottle
- Stand the can or bottle on a flat surface.
- Measure the width and depth at the widest points, including any handle or guard.
- Measure the height to the top of the handle or valve guard.
- Compare with the size on the listing. Leave a little room so it goes in and out easily.
Step 2: Choose your jerry can holder
We have two jerry can holder styles. Both listings give a 350 x 195mm space for the can.
- 425 lockable jerry can holder: 400 x 220 x 500mm. It comes in raw flat plate, checker plate, black or white. It has a padlockable latch and a key lock. The raw flat plate model is 2.5mm aluminium and weighs 6.6kg.
- 313 jerry can holder: 361 x 196 x 303mm, in 2.5mm flat plate. It comes in raw, black or white. It is lower than the 425, and its listings don't mention a lock.
The 425 listing says it suits standard jerry cans. Cans vary, so measure yours first.
- Want to lock the can away? Choose a 425.
- Want a lower holder that keeps the can upright? Look at the 313.
Or choose a gas bottle holder
Match the holder to the bottle size.
- 4.5kg gas bottle holder (324): 335 x 285 x 400mm, in 2.5mm flat plate. It comes in raw, black or white.
- 9kg gas bottle holder (333): 320 x 320 x 320mm in checker plate. The inside is 310 x 310mm.
A 9kg bottle is much bigger than a 4.5kg bottle, so buy the holder that matches your bottle. The gas bottle holder listings don't mention a lock. If you need to lock a bottle away, ask our team what suits.
Oxy and acetylene bottle holders
Tradies who weld or braze on site often carry two bottles. We have two styles.
- 423 checker plate holder: 450 x 230 x 300mm. The inside is 440 x 220mm. Choose it with a divider (423) or without one (423CLEAR).
- 423D flat plate holder: 450 x 230 x 380mm in 3mm flat plate, in raw, black or white. The divider makes two 220 x 220mm sections. The 423C is the same size with no divider.
A divider keeps two bottles apart. An open holder suits one wider item.
Step 3: Pick the spot
- Ute tray: near the headboard or along a side rail. Keep it clear of the tailgate and toolbox lids.
- Trailer or caravan: on the drawbar or the deck, clear of the jockey wheel, coupling and gas bottles. Weight on the drawbar adds to your ball weight.
- Canopy: where you can reach it without unloading the canopy.
Leave room above to lift the can or bottle out, below any canopy roof or rack.
Step 4: Bolt it down
- Sit the holder on a flat, solid base. Mark the bolt holes through its floor.
- Check underneath before you drill. Keep clear of wiring, brake lines and fuel lines.
- Drill, then bolt through. Use large washers to spread the load, and locking nuts so they can't shake loose.
- Check the bolts again after your first trip.
Need bolts? Our toolbox mounting kit has four M10 countersunk bolts, four Nyloc nuts, four 10mm washers and four 65mm fitting washers. We don't install in store, but our team can suggest an installer about 50 metres from our Prestons warehouse.
One tip: check the holder over before you drill. A drilled or altered item can't be returned for a change of mind.
Tool holder for long handles
The range also has the 622 tool holder. It is 600 x 230 x 290mm in checker plate. Use it to keep shovels, bars and other long-handled tools in one spot on the tray.
Carrying fuel and gas safely
These are general tips. Always follow your gas supplier's advice and your state's rules.
- Keep gas bottles upright, with the valve closed, while travelling.
- Carry gas and fuel outside the closed cabin, away from heat.
- Use an approved fuel container, and don't overfill it.
- Check cans, caps and valves for leaks before each trip.
- Have bottles refilled and checked by a licensed outlet.
Finish: raw, black, white or checker
- Raw flat plate: plain natural aluminium.
- Black or white: powder coated, to match a black or white toolbox.
- Checker plate: the raised pattern adds grip. We measure checker plate thickness at the thinnest part, not the raised pattern.
