Ute Canopy Sizes: How to Measure Your Tray and Choose a Canopy

Quick answer: Ute canopy sizes are given as box length x width x height. Our ute canopies are aluminium part canopies and gullwing canopies that sit on a flat tray, behind the cab. Most are 1,770mm long and 820mm high, in 700mm or 800mm widths. We list them by box size, not by vehicle. So whether you drive a HiLux, Ranger, BT-50 or something else, measure your tray first. Then compare it with the canopy size.

This guide covers the sizes we carry, how to measure, mounting, accessories and weight.

Our ute canopy sizes at a glance

A full canopy covers the whole tray. A part canopy covers only the front part, behind the cab. The rest of the tray stays open for loads. Every canopy in our range is a part canopy or gullwing style:

  • Full lid part canopy, 1,770 x 700 x 820mm: raw, black or white flat plate, or raw checker plate.
  • Full lid part canopy, 1,770 x 800 x 820mm: raw, black or white flat plate.
  • Full side part canopy, 1,770 x 1,200 x 820mm: checker plate, with a door opening 1,030mm long.
  • Gullwing canopy with a fridge slide on one side, 1,600 x 700mm: raw or black checker plate.
  • Dog box part canopies, 1,770 x 700mm: full or half dog box, in raw, black or white flat plate or checker plate. There is also a 1,770 x 1,000mm black and white model.

You can also browse them as canopy toolboxes or dog boxes. Always check the box size and the opening sizes on the product page.

How to read a canopy size

Each listing shows the box size as length x width x height. On a part canopy, the length runs across the tray, side to side. The width is how much tray length the canopy takes up. So a 1,770 x 700mm canopy needs a tray about 1,770mm wide, and uses 700mm of its length.

If you are not sure, send us your measurements before you order.

How to measure your tray for a canopy

  1. Tray width: measure side to side across the tray deck.
  2. Tray length: measure from the headboard to the tailgate.
  3. Load space: decide how much tray length you want left for loads.
  4. Height: check what sits above the tray, such as a ladder rack. Think about carports and garages too.
  5. Mounting points: note where the tie-down points and tray rails are.

Leave 20–30mm of clearance on each measurement, for mounting hardware.

HiLux, Ranger, BT-50: will it fit my ute?

Our canopies are not made for one model. Ute trays are not universal. The size changes with the make, the model, the year and the tray brand. A HiLux with a factory tub and a HiLux with an aftermarket alloy tray are very different. The same goes for a Ranger, BT-50, D-MAX, Triton or Navara.

For a quick start, see the 1,770mm canopies on our Hilux canopy and Ford Ranger canopy pages, or the Triton, D-Max, BT-50, Navara and LandCruiser 79 pages. Then measure your own tray to confirm.

Our guide to toolbox dimensions for popular utes lists rough tub sizes. Those are approximate factory figures, and they vary by variant and year. Our article are ute trays universal? explains what to check.

Locks, seals and struts

Our full lid part canopies list:

  • A whale tail lock with barrel and key, and the option to padlock.
  • A steel pinch rubber dust and water seal.
  • Heavy duty stainless steel rod gas struts.
  • A stainless steel piano hinge and fully welded seams.

See the full spec list on the 1,770 x 700 x 820mm raw flat part canopy. The 1,770 x 1,200 x 820mm checker plate full side part canopy lists the same lock and seal.

Dog box canopies are different. They have mesh for air flow and no rubber seal. Always read the spec list on the product page.

Mounting your canopy

A canopy bolts to the tray. Plan where the bolts will go before you drill. Make sure the canopy won't cover tie-down points you still need. Our step-by-step guide on how to attach a canopy to a ute tray covers the process.

We do not offer fitting in store. Our team can suggest an installer about 50 metres from our Prestons warehouse.

Check the canopy over before you drill. To return an item for a change of mind, it must be in its original condition, not drilled or altered.

Accessories worth planning for

Jack off legs

Jack off legs let you lift the canopy off the tray and stand it on its own legs. That frees the tray for other loads. Our set of four is galvanised steel, rated to 2,000lb, with a 1,200mm extension. You wind them with the handles, or with a drill and a 19mm socket.

Canopy ladders

A canopy ladder helps you reach the roof. Ours are aluminium, boltable and foldable, in raw, black or white.

Fridge slides and pantry

Our canopy pantry and fridge slides help you set up for touring. The fridge slide tray is 695mm deep and 490mm wide, with a slide-out chopping board. There is also a black version. The canopy pantry is 830 x 210 x 660mm, with six compartments and heavy duty locking slides.

Check the canopy's door opening against the slide or pantry size before you order.

Weight and payload in plain words

Every ute has a GVM, or gross vehicle mass. That is the most it may weigh when fully loaded. You will find it on the compliance plate.

Payload is what is left once you take away the ute's own weight. The canopy, its fittings, your tools, water and passengers all come out of that payload. Our guide to GVM, payload and toolbox weight explains more.

Questions people ask

What size ute canopy do I need?

Measure your tray width and length. The canopy's length must suit your tray width, with 20–30mm to spare. Its width is the tray length it uses up. Most of our canopies are 1,770mm long, in 700mm or 800mm widths.

Are ute canopies universal?

No. Trays differ by make, model, year and tray brand. That is why we list canopies by box size and ask you to measure your own tray.

Will a Ford Ranger canopy fit a HiLux?

Our canopies are not made for one model, so it comes down to the tray. If both utes have a tray that suits the box size, the same canopy can fit both. Measure first.

Are ute canopies waterproof?

Our full lid part canopies list a steel pinch rubber dust and water seal. Dog box canopies have mesh and no rubber seal. Check the spec list on each product page.
